    John "Vatos" Hernandez

    Drums, Percussion
Making the most of a richly diverse career in music, Los Angeles born John "Vatos" Hernandez, has forged a reputation as a highly versatile and innovative drummer. Overlaying his aggressively fast and deceptively simple beats with a rainbow of ethnic Influences, he has arrived at a whole new style of drumming; creating sounds that consistently set Oingo Boingo and his other projects apart from the mainstream.
Starting on drums at age 4, John was playing professionally by the time he was fifteen. During High School his tastes diversified, he enjoyed the music of Count Basle and played with the Los Angeles Junior symphony, the Young Americans, the Orange County Rhythm Machine and several long term band situations at Disneyland. When John realized his need for additional instruction to help hone his skills and harness his creative energies, he looked to Freddy Gruber for Insight. "I found a teacher with students who sounded like they were getting their message across", says John "and they all sounded different. That speaks to me. It's a sense of freedom". Gruber's encouragement helped John to improve the technical aspects of his playing and most Importantly, he learned the art of self expression. At the same time, John was taught that the ability to make a clear and concise musical statement is the mark of a true professional.
With his Increasing experience and ability, eighteen year old Hernandez found himself doing a wide range of projects, Latin, Rock and Jazz, as well as maintaining a steady schedule of studio sessions. In the mid-seventies, he was house drummer for the television show, The Midnight Special, hosted by Helen Reddy. The position was demanding and put him through his paces with a continually changing set of performers, and although their styles differed greatly from his own, he found Inspiration In their commitment to excellence In performance and depth of musical feeling. Between taping sessions for the show, he toured with Reddy, on one occasion working with composer Michel Legrand and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. For the past decade, John focused his energies on the adventurous group Oingo Boingo, with whom he has recorded a string of hit albums, a selection of videos and a number of movie soundtracks, including the Rodney Dangerfleld smash Back To School, in which John makes a guest cameo appearance.
Thriving on musical risks and variety, John rarely misses the opportunity to engage himself In new and challenging situations, like teaching a successful extension course in studio drumming at USC. No matter what the setting , john "Vatos" Hernandez gives his all.
